A Tribute to Rick Davies, Co-Founder of Supertramp

Rick Davies, the co-founder, singer, and songwriter of the legendary British rock band Supertramp, has passed away at the age of 81. The band announced on September 8 that Davies died after a long battle with multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer. He was known for his contributions to hits like Goodbye Stranger and My Kind Of Lady, and his soulful vocals and distinctive Wurlitzer piano playing were a signature part of Supertramp’s sound.

Legacy and Career Highlights

Born in England in 1944, Davies was a lifelong fan of jazz and blues. He co-founded Supertramp in 1970 and, along with his writing partner Roger Hodgson, played a pivotal role in the band’s success. Their 1979 album Breakfast in America became a cultural phenomenon, winning a Grammy and cementing the band’s place in rock history. After Hodgson’s departure, Davies continued to lead the band before disbanding it at the end of the decade.

A Lasting Impact

Beyond his musical contributions, Davies was known for his warmth and resilience. The band’s statement noted his enduring legacy, saying that his music will continue to “inspire many” and “bear testament to the fact that great songs never die.”
