Music icon Mariah Carey is set to receive the prestigious Video Vanguard Award at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards on September 7. At 56, she will become the oldest recipient of the award, surpassing The Beatles’ film director Richard Lester, who received it in 1984 at age 52. Carey will also perform at the ceremony for the first time in 20 years, with producers promising a “show-stopping, career-spanning medley.”
A Milestone Year for the Star
The award and performance coincide with the release of Carey’s 16th studio album, Here for It All, which is scheduled to drop on September 26. The album’s first single, “Type Dangerous,” has been nominated for Best R&B at this year’s VMAs. The singer’s last VMA performance was in 2005, and her return to the stage is a highly anticipated event. Other notable artists being honored this year include Busta Rhymes with the Rock the Bells Visionary Award and Ricky Martin with the Latin Icon Award.
